Frequently Asked Questions
Mould testing involves collection of air and surface samples to assist in the identification and evaluation of the presence, type and extent of indoor mould contamination likely to cause exposure and potential health risks to occupants.
Mould testing typically involves taking air and surface samples from problem and non-problem areas, which are then analysed in a laboratory to identify the mould genera or species present (eg. water damage indicator mould) and their relative concentrations to assist in determining the source and potential causes of the mould contamination.
If you had a water ingress issue or chronic dampness or elevated humidity conditions in the property, perceive musty odours, spot visible mould growth, or experience unexplained health issues, it is recommended to conduct a professional mould inspection and testing.
Yes, there are specific state and territory regulations and codes of practice in place for asbestos removal to ensure identification prior to removal, safe handling during removal and disposal practices.
You need to ensure damp or elevated humidity conditions are not present and have appropriate moisture control, good ventilation, and regular maintenance which help prevent mould growth. You need to address any water ingress issue promptly.
Asbestos testing is crucial to identify asbestos containing materials (ACM) in buildings and structures and determine which asbestos types (chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite) are present. Asbestos identification and testing by a NATA accredited laboratory to AS4964 is required by legislation.
Certain indoor mould species can be allergenic, pathogenic, mycotoxin producers and may cause inflammation. Exposure to those mould species can lead to various health issues, including but not limited to allergies, lung infection and respiratory problems, and exacerbation of asthma symptoms. Mould sensitive individuals (eg. infants, immuno-compromised) can be more susceptible to mould exposure.
If you provide a sample of asbestos containing materials to the lab for testing, it takes few hours to about few days to receive the laboratory results. If you engage a professional to inspect and collect asbestos samples for laboratory analysis, it could take one day for urgent inspection to about a week for a standard turnaround inspection and compile the asbestos inspection report.
It is strongly recommended to hire experienced professionals for accurate and reliable mould and asbestos testing due to the potential health risks involved. However, if you have sufficient skills and competence in the safe sampling of asbestos and mould you can collect the required samples and send to the laboratory for analysis.
